HistoryDegree.org is published by Degree Prospects, LLC. We’re a Washington, DC company that has run higher education resources for nearly two decades (since 2008). Our goal is to make it simple for aspiring history students to browse every history program in one place, including insights into what you’ll study, potential outcomes, and whether it’s right for you.
Our directory currently holds 2,499 history programs at 1,195 US colleges and universities, ranging from bachelor’s degrees to PhDs, and it grows as we find more.
Our Mission
History students get asked to justify their education more than most. We built this site to answer your questions honestly: to help you work out whether a history degree is right for you, and if it is, which one. That means three things in practice:
- We list everything, not just the schools we hear from. Our directory covers programs at every level in all 50 states and Washington DC, and no school needs to pay to appear in it.
- We cite the numbers, including the unflattering ones. Salaries come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, degree counts from federal IPEDS data, tuition from the College Scorecard. When the data says history graduates start on modest pay and catch up later, we tell it how it is.
- We’d rather be useful than encouraging. A page that tells you a degree might not be worth it is more useful than one that tells you what you hoped to hear.
Our goal is to help students find their place in history.
Frequently Asked Questions
When Was HistoryDegree.org Created?
HistoryDegree.org was launched in August 2026.
Where Are You Located?
Degree Prospects, the organization behind the website, is based in Washington, DC. Our small team can be found across the country.
How Does This Website Make Money?
Degree Prospects is a for-profit company, but this website does not currently make money. It does not sell any products or services, and is free to use by all. If the website is popular enough then we’ll allow a limited number of schools to advertise their programs on it. Those placements will always sit under a “Featured” heading and carry an advertising label, so you can tell them from the rest of the page at a glance.
Either way, we never charge a school to be listed in our directory, and we list every history program we can find whether or not the school has any relationship with us.
Can a School Pay to Rank Higher, or to Be Featured in a Ranking?
No. Our rankings are produced from published data using a scoring model we write up and publish alongside each list, so anyone can check how a school reached its position. Advertisers get no consideration in that scoring, no advance notice, and no ability to have a result changed. A ranking that could be bought wouldn’t be worth publishing, and it wouldn’t be worth reading either.
Where Does Your Data Come From?
Our program listings are built by reading institution catalogs and department pages directly. The figures we quote alongside them come from federal sources: IPEDS for degrees awarded and institutional data, the College Scorecard for tuition and outcomes, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook for pay and job growth. Statistics are linked to sources so you can check them yourself.
Our directory is thorough but it isn’t a government census, so we describe it as what we track rather than as a complete count of what exists.
How Often Do You Update the Website?
Continuously. Programs are added as we find them, figures are refreshed when the underlying federal data is updated, and new guides and rankings are published throughout the year.
I Noticed You’re Missing a Program. How Do I Get It Added?
Email us the school name, the program name, and a link to the program page, and we’ll add it and confirm once it’s live. There’s no charge to do so. We appreciate additions sent to us by our readers.
I Found an Error. Will You Correct It?
Yes! Details change, schools discontinue programs, and webpages move, so we want to hear about any errors you discover. Send us the page and what appears to be incorrect.
